Choose your starter
A quick look at all eight kits, their databases, authentication and hosting.
There isn't one stack you need to use with Nextbase. Start with the one you are comfortable maintaining.
Here is the complete v5 lineup. The names in the first column match the kits; the app layer column tells you what is running in the current repository. Each kit links to its overview, and from there to its installation, environment variables, authentication, agent connections, project structure and deployment pages.
| Starter | App layer | Database | Login provider | Hosting used in the demo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Next.js + Supabase | Next.js App Router | Supabase Postgres | Supabase Auth | Vercel |
| TanStack + Supabase | React Router 8 framework mode + Express | Supabase Postgres | Supabase Auth | Vercel |
| Next.js + Convex | Next.js App Router | Convex | Convex Auth | Vercel + Convex |
| TanStack + Convex | TanStack Start | Convex | Convex Auth | Vercel + Convex |
| Next.js + Neon | Next.js App Router | Neon Postgres | Better Auth | Vercel |
| TanStack + Neon | React Router 8 framework mode + Express | Neon Postgres | Better Auth | Vercel |
| Next.js + Cloudflare D1 | Next.js through OpenNext | Cloudflare D1 | Better Auth | Cloudflare Workers |
| TanStack + Cloudflare D1 | React Router on Workers, with TanStack Query | Cloudflare D1 | Better Auth | Cloudflare Workers |
Supabase
Pick a Supabase kit if you want Postgres, authentication and storage from one platform. The kits use Supabase Auth and database policies to protect workspace data.
Convex
Pick a Convex kit if you like writing your backend functions in TypeScript and using reactive queries in your app. Convex runs the backend; Vercel hosts the website. The MCP servers live on the Convex HTTP endpoint.
Neon
Pick a Neon kit if you want Postgres with your authentication handled in the application. Better Auth manages sign in, and Drizzle owns the database schema and migrations. The repositories still have planetscale in their names, but the current database is Neon Postgres.
Cloudflare D1
Pick a D1 kit if you want the app to run on Cloudflare Workers. D1 stores application data, with Cloudflare services used for the other parts of the app. These kits have their own Worker setup and deployment steps.
What about agent access?
All 8 kits have separate user and admin connections. The Supabase, Neon and D1 MCP tools are read-only in this release. The Convex user MCP also supports creating a project when the user explicitly grants write access. Every admin MCP is read-only.
See tools and permissions before choosing an agent workflow that needs writes.
